What is 100 Book Challenge?
100 Book Challenge is a program designed by the American Reading Company. This program determines a student's current reading level, which are identified by colors. Students read books that are within their color/reading level. This helps them build fluency, vocabulary, and reading stamina. Their progress is tracked by their Language Arts teacher in regular one-on-one conferences. During these conferences, the teacher assesses their vocabulary and reading skills.
Each week, students are expected to read at least ten steps, and document these steps in their reading log. One step is equal to fifteen minutes. So, if a child read for 45 minutes, they should record three steps in their reading log. A parent or adult's signature is required. Please keep an eye on your child as they read to ensure they are keeping their eyes on the page and not letting their attention wander! Ask them questions about the book they are reading to build comprehension. Some questions you can ask are:
- Who are the main characters in this book? How would you describe them?
- What is the setting in the book? When you visualize the setting, what do you see?
- What made you choose this book? Do you really like this genre? Why?
- Can you make a prediction about how the book is going to end? What details helped you make that prediction?

Common Questions (with answers!) About 100 Book Challenge
Q: I left my log book at school. What should I do?
A: Use a piece of paper to log your steps, and then transfer the information into your log book when you get to school.
Q: How can I keep track of my time at home?
A: Use the stopwatch feature on a cell phone or iPhone, or the timer on the microwave. You can also jot down the time you start reading so when you finish you are able to calculate the total minutes read.
Q: I can read silver level books, but I am on the purple level. Why?
A: Being able to read all the words is great, but silver and gold level books require a great level of analysis. For example, instead of just being able to identify the setting, silver and gold level books require the reader to be able to explain what the setting of the book is intended to reveal about the time period in history in which it takes place. Do not lose hope, if you keep reading and thinking deeply as you read you will reach your goals!
